Shot on 16mm film, Bloody Brilliant was my first experience working exclusively as a writer

What I Learned from Letting Go
Bloody Brilliant was my first experience outside the director’s chair, working instead as the screenwriter for Giulia Assenza. It was a rewarding challenge to help shape someone else’s vision through hours of discussion and development. My task was translating Giulia’s concept into a concise, six-minute screenplay that balanced mind reading, menstruation, friendship, conflict, and resolution. Personally, while I would have simplified the narrative, I made sure to honour the director’s creative choices.

Though my writing role didn’t require me on set, I stayed involved by capturing behind-the-scenes content and managing the film’s social media. With a more laid-back role, I had the space to connect with new people, observe the crew dynamic, and better understand how responsibilities are shared on set. It was also where I met Charlie Stamatogiannis and Angus Webb Ware, who later collaborated with me on my graduate film.

Production came with its surprises — continuity errors during the shoot and a post-production process that became a classic case of ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’. But stepping back from a more central role helped me stay objective, learn from others, and enjoy the process without becoming too emotionally invested.

This project challenged me in new ways: to listen more, to let go, and to reflect on what it means to support someone else’s creative vision. Bloody Brilliant was a great exercise in collaborative storytelling, and it’s helped shape the kind of creative leader I hope to be going forward.
